Internet Drug Sales - Senator Feinstein wants illegal Internet drug sales stopped!
Senator Dianne Feinstein conducted a meeting regarding the regulatory control of prescription drugs via the Internet. This bill was introduced in 2004 by Feinstein with no reply from the DEA. It is back on the forefront 3 years later.
Senator Sessions, Philip Heyman- former Deputy Attorney General under the Clinton Administration, Thomas McLellan- Exec. Dir of Univ. Of Pennsylvania Treatment Research, Joseph Califano-President of the National Center on Drug Addiction & Substance Abuse and others were on hand to address the issues
Feinstein accused the DEA of being absent for a decade on these matters. It was stated that many kids are buying drugs via text messages on their cell phones. The charges show up on the bill as ringtones so the parents don't know. Senator Feinstein clearly wants this practicev and the sale of illegal drugs via the Internet stopped!
The largest problem is that it is very difficult to regulate the drug sellers as these sites pop-up and shutdown rapidly. The US DEA has a hard time prosecuting foreign sites selling to US citizens. Whatever the solution- it needs to scale so they can track tbe banks supporting these sales and the dealers. Much like what is done with money laundering.
They are also talking about Internet providers blocking these sites upon your request. In my view-this would be hard to do as these sellers are very migratory and are hard to track or block via specific IP addresses, blocked words etc.
This reminds me of when similar discussions were occurring about Gambling on the Internet. Many of those key players were arrested.
Possible outcome is yet to be decided. I suspect that they will follow the money and report the seller and buyer via the credit card institution and hosting service provider. Stay tuned!
