Microsoft Forced Intrusion - Even when you have Updates OFF!
I am really steamed on this one....
Take away in shOrt:
Microsoft - love what you offer to an overall "GENERAL" marketplace. But re-think your teams position on this one. It worked 3-5 years ago- but NOT TODAY. Seed the markt with product...then install tracking of licenses....then use that as more room to perform unacknowledged actions from the PC and data owner...Hummm? NOT GOOD.
IT SOUNDS SO SIMPLE AND TRUSTING. BUT IF THATS IS THE CASE -WHY NOT PUT THE CONTROL IN THE POWER OF THE PC OWNER? ACCEPT, TURN-OFF UPDATES ETC....
Do you have that many buggs you dont want anyone to know when you need to update...communicate if it is helpful to your users..it is key. Everyone gets that there are updates required...new virsues etc. Communicate - don't force intrusion on systems.
This install and or exe. that performs functions on a PC that is NOT yours - without knowledge of the owner of the computer and/or business - is NEVER acceptable. TRUST ME ON THIS. Check the law. If it is not there expect me to step UP.
NOW TO THE STORY.....
MICROSOFT - DO YOU UNDERSTAND TRUST? INTRUSION OF NETWORKS AND PERSONAL DATA?
It is principal AND MOST LIKELY THE LAW - not just what your goal is.
REPEAT OF AN IMPORTANT STORY:
ZDnet blogger Adrian Kingsley-Hughes discovered that Microsoft has been pushing out "stealth updates" to users of Windows XP and Vista.
INPUT: I think this is wrong. Dont touch my systems secretly (without knowledge and acceptance) for ANTHYING. If it is personal or BUSINESS - this is intrusion to a system YOU don NOT own. We expect "warning" boxes, or "accept" actions for specific functions perfromed on our PCs. YOU DO NOT OWN THEM.
INTRUSION IN ANY FORM IS NO LONGER OK. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
RE: per the blogger Adrain, "The company has been changing system files via Windows Update without notifying the user with a notification or permission dialog box.
What's more, it was discovered that these updates take place even if Windows Update is set to "manual" or "off".
INPUT: The intrusion of systems without authority. Call it what you want - is not good.
PERIOD.
Here is the Spinn:
Ars Technica got in touch with Microsoft for a little clarification and here's what they said: "The files that are being updated are part of the Windows Update client itself. Windows Update automatically updates itself from time to time to ensure that it is running the most current technology, so that it can check for updates and notify customers that new updates are available. This is normal behavior, and it has worked this way since the service debuted several years ago." So there you have it, folks. The "stealth" updates are merely updates to Windows Update itself, nothing worth crying foul about.
INPUT: Nice for them to say when they are doing whatever the spin is. Hummm....like the release of the license checking servlett..licenses checking is OK -but scraping oF data, profiling, or whatever else could be occurring - WE DO NOT KNOW AS WE ARE NOT TOLD- THIS is a RISK! You- WE- have no clue. Especially if you are given a WHAT COULD BE PRECIEVED as a sneak intruder app. under a "license update" umbrella.
REPEAT: Microsoft - love what you offer to an overall "GENERAL" marketplace. But re-think your teams position on this one. It worked 3-5 years ago- but NOT TODAY.
This install and or exe. that performs functions on a PC that is NOT yours - without knowledge of the owner of the computer and/or business - is NEVER acceptable. TRUST ME ON THIS. HOLD TIGHT... or call me if you have issues with my comments.
