Qualcomm Partners with Google to rival Apples iPhone!
2008 will be a great year for mobile handset providers, New Media (music, TV, Video entertainment)
distributors and wireless operators embracing new business models to support the wireless global convergence!
Today in Barcelona Spain (Wireless Conference) Qualcomm's CEO Paul Jacobs announced a Partnership
with Google designed to go up against Apples iPhone. Trust that they will be very competitve. So we should expect rivals to the iPhone to raise the bar past the initial iPhones' functionality.
Don't worry-Qualcomm is not exclusive to Google as they have worked with Microsoft over the past year. They also have plans to support multiple operating systems and new business models. One mentioned was Hutchinson3 where they developed prepaid phones with services such as Skype for phone to phone calling on a prepaid plan.
What's driving the convergence in the Mobile space? Mobile broadband demand is spreading so rapidly as users want the Internet and PC-like functionality on their cell phones. Therefore, handset manufactures are rushing to support multiple operating systems to accomodate a variety of operator and end-user needs for global commercialization.
To get an idea of the market size-There are over 1 billion handsets shipped per year globally. So the market is far more vast than the PC market. This means that there is plenty of room for competition between all of the handset providers.
Not to mention massive revenue potential.
Expect the wireless market to be the catalyst of many mergers and new partnerships that were previously not imagined. Holdon for the ride-this will prove to be as innovative as our first Internet applications developed for B2b and eCommerce in the early 2000's!
